South Side Studios Presents:

The Alla Prima Studio: Oil Painting for Lifelong Learners (Ages 55+)

South Side Studios WV is excited to offer a free, 10-week oil painting workshop designed especially for adults ages 55 and up. Led by local artist and experienced instructor Shade Black, this course introduces the expressive alla prima (“all at once”) painting technique—where vibrant works are created in a single sitting.

This hands-on class is open to all skill levels—from complete beginners to experienced painters—and is especially welcoming to those returning to painting after time away. Participants will learn foundational skills including color mixing, brushwork, and composition in a supportive, social environment.

Location: Twin Knots Gallery & Studios, 204 Virginia Avenue, Petersburg, WV 26847
Orientation: Tuesday, April 21, 11:00 AM- 12:00 PM
Workshops: Tuesdays, April 28 – June 30 11:00 AM - 2:15 PM

The first three sessions include a live demonstration from 11:00 AM–12:00 PM, followed by guided painting from 12:15–2:15 PM. Remaining sessions meet from 12:15–2:15 PM, with optional demonstrations continuing for those who wish to attend.

Exhibition Opportunity:
Participants will showcase their “works in progress” in a public exhibition at Twin Knots Gallery on June 13, held in conjunction with the Folk Around Art & Music Festival.

Cost & Registration:
This program is free to attend. To secure your spot and ensure commitment to the full series, we ask for a $30 refundable deposit, which will be returned upon completion of the program.
